Morrocan Daze

March 2010

Composed by Sumi while studying with Dennis Sandole. It is based off of a six tone Egyption scale.

This piece was composed after studying with my dear friend Ghanian drummer and percussionist Joachim Lartey. I would go with my family when I lived in upstate NY to his house and we would all play a rhythm that he taught us, and then he would accompany us and go OFF improvising into a wondrous land of polyrhythms and duple meters, while we tried to keep the original beat, not an easy task (for us!). He taught me a Moroccan rhythm phonetically as ta-ki ta-ki ga-mer-ra, a rhythm in 7/8. This very much influenced this composition and how I play over the left hand.
